I’ll add more to this later but I thought of several experiences I have had talking to persons in charge of running a fl program, be it a class, a department, or a school. When presented with the alternative to drills and worksheets – communication – they will admit that such an approach is very attractive and probably should be what is used, but………
The public/students/school board/testing services/principal/department chair/parents/God…. idolize the old way of doing things and exspect their children will be taught the same way they were. When challenged to challenge those exspectors with, “…. and how much French did you learn?” they will grin sheepishly and admit they don’t know of anyone who really learned any of the fl in school, but….
That’s an old paradigm – beloved, cherished, expected, and inept.
