A wikipedia article on translating modern terms for modern musical genres caught my eye. Words like rock, rap, blues, jazz, rock and roll, etc. were discussed with the upshot that neither giving the words Latin endings nor “translating” them, e.g musica saxosa (which translates the wrong word ’rock’) results in anything useful. The article recommends leaving them as undeclinables accompanied by a full Latin word like ’musica’.
Makes sense to me. But what I noticed was how a number of attempts were made which used words reflecting the coiners’ belief that people who dance to these African-derived musical forms are demented. I thought to myself, “I wonder if any of these people have ever overheard Black people talk about White people as they watch them dance.” I strongly doubt it; I strongly doubt they know any Black people.
