Solecisms # 3 – Just odd

“In the next few hours, Rita will no longer become a hurricane” instead of “be a hurricane”.
Here’s a usage of mine that I’ve heard commonly spoken but I don’t understand: “I wished I had it” instead of “I wish I had it.” Anyone want to explain this?
“I used to live in Tucson for 20 years”  ????
“She’s trying to join Althea Gibson as the only Black woman to have won this Open” – well then, Althea wouldn’t be the only one, right?
