Language snobs

From a listserv:
“Nothing worse than “haiga.”
Mexico has an ongoing campaign against the word.”
Like so many grammar mavens, this person does not recognize an archaic form that has survived in selected areas. Similarly, usages like “hit” for “it” or “might could” for “might be able to” survive from dialectal and archaic forms found in various places and various times in the panoply that is English. The same for Spanish and for any other language in the world. It is just makes one feel so superior to disparage other people’s speech, esp when they are not a member of the literati or educated elite.
