The difficulty in grasping the essence of West African music lies in the fact that so much of it has become the foundation of North American and therefore world music. So when we hear the rhythms we are used to hearing in our own music, we focus on those and miss the competing rhythms in the same piece, thereby losing the complexity which is one of the world’s wonders.
