The following url is to a you tube of The Horse, by Cliff Nobles. I put it here as an example of the “push-pull” effect of the 2 on 3 of so much African-derived music. It takes 50 seconds into the number for this push-pull effect to be so strongly realized, 2 beats on the horns followed by an echoing 2 beats all over an on-going rhythm that rolls along in what I take to be 3 beats. NOW, what I’m asking is for someone who understands music to listen to it and describe in musical terms what is going on, i.e. how that pull-push effect is achieved. Is it indeed 2 against 3 as I’ve described?
