I’m taking a break from my scheduled reading to get through A Media Voz, by Ricardo Maldonado, a book on the Spanish clitic se. I enjoy it but it is as difficult as the other book on Middle Voice I read, Middle Voice by Suzanne Kemmer. I’m not sure it being in Spanish makes it any harder to read. You just have to read passages over and over to get what he is saying.
So far, the first page has a nice find: he states that the focus on grooming and direct reflexives is misleading. I’ve always felt that giving students the idea that se is about “the action coming back on the subject” causes all sorts of confusion as there are many uses of se.
