Our Martian lands on earth. He happens to touch down on the Anatolian Plateau in the middle of modern day Turkey. He notices people using their breath and various organs to produce sounds that seem to be used for communication. So they decide this phenomenon must be central to human existence and decide to investigate. They begin seeing how the language works.
Now, 2 questions: does it matter that it’s Turkish and not Igbo or French or Malay or Ifugao or Guarani or Navaho or Norwegian or ……. 5000-6000 languages does it matter which one they investigate? And #2: does it matter that they are talking to people in a village who have only enough education to be able to read the newspaper? They do not speak the way people speak in a university classroom in Istanbul. Does that matter?
