A Latin Scholar

Latin Scholar
Among many phrases and maxims associated with Latin, the epithet or sobriquet, Latin scholar, has most irritated me. So portentous, raising any kid who signs up for Latin above his peers for no reason. It turns out this collocation has a history. It was used earlier in European history and then brought back in North America in the face of massive evidence that students studying Latin were not learning Latin.
