I’ll be hung/hanged

Quite naturally I say, “Hitler hanged Bonhoefer and hung the conspirators on meat hooks.” I wonder if anyone knows how/why the past tense of hang is hung except when it is a gallows hanging and then it’s hanged. I would not say I hanged my jacket up but I would use the intransitive as in I hung by my finger tips for two minutes, not I hanged.
