Yesterday MSNBC played Putin’s comment about Trump and he used the word yarkii. The normal word for brilliant is blest’ashchii which does indeed mean shining (verb blest’et’) but also brilliant of mind. Yarkii can mean, figuratively, outstanding but when we say someone is bright, we mean umnyi (smart). As in English, many other words exist in Russian to get the idea across, but the Russian language expert employed by MSNBC indicated yarkii would not be it. It certainly fits with Trump’s personality.
