Wonky is a new word for me and random is not, but the meaning of both have changed. Wonky means someone obsessed with the minutiae of policy matters and is new for me. But yesterday my grandson’s girlfriend (“She’s NOT my girlfriend!!”) used the word and it didn’t fit my understanding of it so I asked her what she meant by it. “Weird” was her response. Typical downgrading of meaning.
My last year of teaching on my 20 year stint a kid said, “That was random.” Well, no, it wasn’t random. Yeah it was. No, what does random mean to you? Then I realized it had come to mean for kids what we called off-the-wall, out of the blue, out in left field.
