Why language is important

In going over my essay of teaching Standard English, I said the following and my friend, Brian, thought it worth writing out. So here it is:

What really worries me is that our country is splitting between the haves
and have nots. A big corollary of this split is that kids in the have nots
may find many doors closed to them unless they learn standard English, since
they don’t live with people who speak it. The huge majority of teachers
responsible for teaching SE to them is unaware that these kids do not
actually speak SE, which is an intermediate step in acquiring Formal Written English.
