As my department moves toward a proficiency-based curriculum, we are
rethinking the textbook situation/dilemma. In our Intermediate (currently
Spanish 3) and Advanced courses, we are using current events news articles and
movies as the basis of our teaching and vocabulary, and along the way we are
giving the students the necessary grammatical scaffolding to interpret and
communicate about these topics. We are essentially no longer using our
textbooks and therefore the accompanying workbooks are no longer functional.
Instead, we’d like to find a sort of generic workbook that reinforces the
grammar with straightforward exercises using common verbs and vocabulary,
exercises to essentially do at home to reinforce and clarify.
