Mackridge in Language and National Identity in Greece 1766-1976 notes that there was little to no alignment between cultural and political views and views on language. Those advocating an Enlightenment approach to culture supported archaisms in the language and conservative churchmen supported the cultivation of the Demotic. As I read this, that is exactly what I hoped to learn about. Very promising.
