When the Democrats lost the November election in 1946 and Truman, blamed for the loss, returned to Washington, only ONE PERSON was on the platform to greet him: Dean Acheson, dressed in formal diplomatic garb. Truman was impressed with his loyalty and invited him to the White House. At this point, all that Acheson had done came together as they talked, and within a few days, Acheson’s words, verbatim, were put into the President’s speech, from which they became known as the Truman Doctrine.
