When a person wants to investigate language, they have one at hand if they are not fussy about which language they investigate. That language is their own. A native English speaker can try out, “I’m doing it right now,” and *”I’m knowing it right now,” and realize the verbs ‘do’ and ‘know’ operate differently.
But if they’ve swallowed the garbage of the gate-keepers and scolds, they will doubt their knowledge of their own language. Who hasn’t heard it a million times? “Oh, my English is terrible.” So that route is closed.
