Testing – what is it good for?

When I tested over a story I would make fresh copies for the test b/c students often wrote the English above the FL words. Besides making for a real test it also showed them they actually knew enough to get the meat out of the story to be able to answer questions.
However, some students were going to do well on a test no matter what. But if a student did poorly, I looked at their other work incl. participation before giving an overall or summative grade. That just drives some people nuts and those are the people who make up the various educational reform movements. Tests are the only thing that counts. To quote our current (for how long?) president: sad.
