We often hear of Americans fearing living under terrorism. Max Boot, in his Invisible Armies, says only two terrorist organizations in the history of the world has achieved their goals: John Brown’s raiders and the KKK, the former by setting off the Civil War which got the slaves freed, his goal, and the latter by depriving Black citizens of their constitutional rights.
Boot is very clear that the White South did this via terror. So some Americans, Black Americans, lived under terror and in some places still do.
