Panda Bear

We wonder at times how our grandchildren navigate their biraciality. They live in the East Valley of Maricopa County, Arizona, one of the reddest parts of the country, and hostility toward racial minorities runs high along with support for Trump.

So it was with delight that our granddaughter, a high school senior, told us yesterday that the teacher was asking students to select a “spirit animal” [verging close to paganism there, aren’t you, Teach?]. Then she asked them to tell their spirit animal and why they picked that one. Our granddaughter picked the Panda because her mom is White and her Dad Black.
