The connection is “connection.” Definition 3 relies on the “connections” among people who gather in a place. The series of definition 2 relies on one to one connections but one after another. So, like so many abstractions, it lends itself to an extension of meaning, a metaphor. A physical chain becomes the abstract chain of thought.
