Reading Babel, the author not the tower

Out of frustration at not being able to continue my language reading project of Harry Potter in several languages, I grabbed a copy of Isaac Babel off my shelf and began reading it, determined not to look up ANYTHING. That is the curse of loving every little detail about language: you want to look up even words you already know “just to be sure” and you want to check grammar points, etc. That is not a good way to acquire language via reading.
