In order to maintain their veneer of innocence, conservatives have turned being a victim into a moral failing. Those brave souls who cry, “I will not be a victim!” receive their approbation because it absolves the perpetrators of responsibility for the crime. So conservatives can retreat to their tried and true formula: “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. When life knocks you down, get up again. Make lemonade out of the lemons life throws at you.” That way, everyone goes along their merry way without having to change their actions or their thinking. How can there be a crime if there are no victims?
