Reading Patrick O’Brian’s well-drawn characters in his Aubrey-Maturin novels, I am struck over and over again by the way the behaviors of some of the characters recall the behaviors in my grandsons. It is another factor in my sense that autism has always been around and have been “reified”, so to speak, into a syndrome or “spectrum” as we say. I can refer specifically to Mr. Graham in the eighth novel, The Ionian Mission.
