An unlikely movie: Caste, Isabel Wilkerson’s stupendous book on caste in America (and elsewhere), subtitled “The Source of Our Discontent.” How do you make a movie out of a social condition, a social institution.
Some social movements have their movies, e.g. Norma Rae for unionism, the Civil Rights movement and the women’s movement have yielded good films. This notion of caste, though, demands the evocation of intense feelings and subtle language. Jan. 19 we can see how Duvernay has done it, because a few folks on MSNBC have praised it. We’ll see.
