This from David Brooks: you can tell what kind of conservative a conservative is by what era he wants to go back to. He says the Trump lot want to go back to the Robber Baron era of the Gilded Age, the 1880s; I would say the early Medieval period just before the 12th century Renaissance: the Great Organic, everyone knowing his place and being in it…. no “her place” being necessary. Typically, in the musings of conservatives, we notice especially the absences, IOW things they don’t like disappear e.g. girls in short skirts (honestly), nerds holding power through knowledge, unseemingly people kept out of view (poor people, suspect minorities, newcomers of any kind – known as ‘upstarts’), new-fangled devices and anything modern (post-1500) in architecture, art, literature (the holy books people are big on that one), and music played on anything other than a lute (absolutely no drums except in battle).
These people are both transparent and laughable. But they are driven by their hatreds, like the (ethnic group deleted) who god favored with a boon, qualifying it with the notice that his neighbor across the border, a (ethnic group deleted) would get twice what was bestowed on the favored one. In the blink of an eye (foreshadowing) the first fellow roared out, “Take one of my eyes!” What’s only one eye when you can have vengeance and retribution? After all, MAGAs have been giving up their teeth ever since Bacon’s Rebellion.
In a positive vein, what would conservatives like to see? Obeisance, groveling, a tip of the hat, sexual favors from helpless servants, rents (i.e. earning money with no effort; you can even hire some underling to collect the rents), no change. IOW, think of the Tidewater aristocrats of Old Virginia circa 1680.
Lots of MAGAs think of themselves as Bacon’s rebels, forgetting that the mixture of British and African servants led to a huge increase in the importation of African slaves to weaken the hold British (= White) servants had on labor. In exactly the same way, fear of Blacks gaining power now will allow them to do the same to Whites as what Whites have been doing to them all along. Imagine the horror of “Black only” drinking fountains being nicer than ones not even being marked White, just Other.
