“Donald Trump is a child,” “Donald is childish.” We hear this but perhaps fail to take in its full meaning, which is that Trump believes, as a child believes, that disagreeing with his wants and desires is a vicious attack and produces tears and foot stompling. “No, you can’t go out and play,” produces that sort of thing, like “No, you cannot impose tariffs.”
Since his immaturity is so obvious why do Republicans support him? It is because they are immature, too. Witness their obsession with keeping all their money and not sharing; look at their reaction to being told no; wallow in their petty attacks on anyone disagreeing with them. Their reactions do two things: they reveal their immaturity and they point to the authoritarian personalities that dominate their ranks. Corey Robins has labeled them reactionaries; you can be a conservative only if something has changed in a way you don’t like so you react to it. Makes sense.
But none of them is the adult in the room. Like Obama’s reference to Uncle Harold, you let him in the room but you don’t give him anything important to do.
